There are a lot of ways to defend against a kick. A kick really is energy just coming at you it’s the same as a punch only it’s at the leg and it’s a lot more faster and stronger and has more reach typically.
Ok, if he wants to punch me while I’m in range here, ok Boom! But if he wants to kick me, I have to get further out of the way to avoid that leg. You can step back out of the way of a kick but the problem with that is you really haven’t changed anything, you’ve give your opponent momentum as he comes in. Well now he’s got momentum to strike you or do whatever else. If I move out of the way of a kick over here , get out of the way that changes his trajectory he needs to follow up with the secondary attack, punch or a kick. If I move to the outside which is safer but I’m still too close to him or not far enough away from him – scratch that reverse it- if I am too far away from him, he can still retaliate.
